Bowling Green Dental Surgery has been part of Stevenage since the 1980s. Dr Alan de Vos qualified BDS at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg in 1995 and acquired the practice in 2005, after moving to the UK in 2001. His mother, Glennis, is the practice manager — the warm, familiar voice you hear when you call. Many of our patients are second- and third-generation families.
Being independent matters more than people realise. There are no monthly corporate KPIs telling Dr Alan to upsell a treatment, no rotating locums, no profit-share targets that decide who you see. The same dentist works on you every visit. The way that builds trust — particularly for nervous patients and for complex implant work — is the single biggest reason patients choose us over a chain.
We have invested heavily in technology so that the work itself can be done well: CEREC Omnicam for same-day porcelain crowns, Orthophos 3D CBCT for accurate implant planning, digital x-rays at the lowest practical radiation, and Astra Tech for implants. Dr Alan completed the FGDP Dental Implant Course and undertakes annual CPD; for facial aesthetics he trained directly with Professor Bob Khanna, the internationally-recognised facial-aesthetics educator.

Yes. We accept most major UK dental insurance providers. Patients pay us directly and claim back from their insurer — we provide full itemised receipts. We also offer Denplan and Practice Plan monthly payment schemes that cover routine care.
Can I switch from an NHS dentist to your private practice?+
Absolutely — many of our patients have switched. There is no formal transfer process. You can simply book a new patient examination with us and we will request your records from your previous practice if helpful. The first visit gives us a complete picture, and we will discuss any treatment you would like at your own pace.
