Questions answered

Clear Aligner FAQs

How do clear aligners work?

Clear aligners are a series of custom-made, removable plastic trays that gradually move your teeth into the desired position. You wear each set for approximately 1–2 weeks before moving to the next. Treatment is supervised by Dr Alan throughout with regular check-up appointments.

How long does clear aligner treatment take?

Treatment time varies depending on the complexity of your case. Minor corrections may take as little as 3–6 months. More involved cases typically take 12–18 months. Dr Alan will give you an accurate estimate at your consultation after assessing your teeth.

Are clear aligners as effective as traditional braces?

For most adult patients with mild to moderate crowding, spacing, or bite issues, clear aligners achieve excellent results. For complex orthodontic cases, traditional braces or specialist orthodontic referral may be more appropriate. We will be honest about what clear aligners can and cannot achieve for your specific situation.

How often do I wear the aligners?

For best results, aligners should be worn for 20–22 hours per day — removing them only to eat, drink (anything other than water), and to brush and floss. The more consistently you wear them, the more predictable and fast the result.

Will clear aligners affect my speech?

Most patients notice a very slight lisp for the first few days as their tongue adapts. This resolves quickly for the vast majority. After that, most people find aligners have minimal impact on speech.

Is the treatment painful?

Clear aligners cause some pressure and mild discomfort when you switch to a new set of trays — this is normal and is a sign the teeth are moving. It usually passes within 1–2 days. This is generally less uncomfortable than traditional metal braces.

What happens after treatment finishes?

Once treatment is complete, retainers are provided to hold your teeth in their new position. Teeth have a natural tendency to drift back without retention, so wearing your retainer as directed is essential to maintaining your results long-term.

What is SureSmile and who makes it?

SureSmile is a clear aligner system made by Dentsply Sirona — the same company behind our CEREC technology. With over one million patients treated globally and a 75% no-refinement rate, SureSmile is one of the most clinically proven clear aligner systems available. Treatment is prescribed and supervised by Dr Alan throughout.

What is the VPro device?

The VPro is a small vibrating device included with SureSmile treatment. You wear it for just 5 minutes per day to help fully seat your aligners and support tooth movement. It comes as standard — there is no additional charge.
